Our project focuses on the family of SMC complexes (SMC – Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes) which we study in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The SMCs have been shown to influence most DNA-based processes, including transcription, replication, segregation and repair. The SMCs are also known to shape DNA topology. Thus, our overall aim is to understand the interplay between SMCs, DNA topology and chromosome dynamics.
