Evolution of bacterial genomes

My group studies the evolution of bacterial genomes. Our goal is to understand the mutational mechanisms and evolutionary forces underlying adaptive changes in bacterial genomes. A major focus is on reductive genome evolution, which is a characteristic feature of host-adapted bacteria. We also study environmental bacteria with small genomes. A long-term goal is to understand the origin and evolution of mitochondria.
