More than half of the human genome consists of various repetitive and transposable elements. Expression of these elements is not beneficial for genome proliferation and they are usually silenced. My group is using a wide range of methods from genetics and genomics to structural biology, to understand how genomes recognize repetitive and transposable elements and pack them into heterochromatin.
