I study the molecular and cellular basis of malfunctioning of the brain. In particular, I examine stem cell function in the healthy and diseased brain, also in comparison to stem cells in the equally quiescent pancreas. The study of these rather rare cells in adult organs has guided the establishment of very powerful technologies aimed at molecular interrogation of single cells. The knowledge gained should pave the way for regenerative therapies.
