Assessing microbial diversity, its functions and drivers in complex natural ocean environments is a key objective of my group. We have combined molecular methods of biology and chemistry to investigate microbial life in polar and deep-sea environments in situ. These habitats fascinate us by their extreme and dynamic conditions, causing substantial temporal and spatial variations in ocean life, with relevance to the ecology of the Earth System.
