His research investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms leading to neurodegeneration. He discovered that alterations of NGF signaling and homeostasis are an upstream driver of Alzheimer's disease neurodegeneration. In translational work, he developed two humanized antibodies, currently in clinical trials for chronic pain in man. He pioneered the intrabody technology for interfering with protein function in living cells (intrabodies)
