Recent research has unraveled a remarkable diversity of modifications that adjust the coding properties of bases in DNA and RNA and amino acids of proteins. Such modifications are often dynamic, providing a reversible gene-regulation mechanism. Our aim is to identify writers, readers and erasers of such marks and to gain mechanistic understanding of their biological relevance with a focus on preimplantation embryo development.
