My research focuses on uncovering the epigenetic basis of human diseases. We aim to address a deceptively simple question: why do individuals who have been healthy for decades develop conditions like schizophrenia or Alzheimer's disease? Why are the disease-predisposing genes not toxic during youth and adulthood? We propose that the temporal ('chronos') dimension of the epigenome may shed new light on phenotypic transformations not only in disease but also in aging and development.
