We study embryonic stem (ES) cells. Our goal is to understand the molecular foundations of self-renewal and pluripotency. We are investigating determinants of the decision to retain or exit pluripotency and the process of capacitation for lineage commitment. We are interested in the relationship between stem cell lines propagated in culture and transient progenitor cells in the early embryo. We aim to identify unifying principles in all mammals.
