In a multidisciplinary programme that integrates experimental studies of cell fate behaviour in tissues with statistical and mathematical modelling approaches, we apply concepts from theoretical physics and mathematics to understand how principles of emergence and self-organization provide insight into mechanisms of organ development in both healthy and diseased states.
