Low genetic variation exists among modern crop varieties, hampering their ability to respond to selection or environmental perturbation. Focusing on natural genomic variation of crops and their wild relatives, we investigate their population history as well as the genetics of phenotypic variation and environmental adaptation. The knowledge could be utilized to design future breeding programs and assess population risk upon climate change.
