We are trying to understand the mechanisms that underlie the assembly of neural connections in the vertebrate visual system. Axons from retinal ganglion cells in the eye navigate over a long distance with remarkable accuracy to reach their synaptic targets in the brain. Increasing evidence points to a significant role for post-transcriptional mechanisms in this process and our work focuses on RNA localization and axonal protein synthesis.
