I have been long fascinated by the fact that the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that circulates around the brain and spinal cord can influence brain development and function. My group showed that neurons contacting the CSF in the spinal cord detect mechanical cues and feed back inhibition to circuits driving locomotion and posture. Our recent data reveals mechanisms enabling the detection of CSF-related cues to regulate development and inflammation.
