I am interested in the discovery of novel natural products in actinobacteria using genomics-guided approaches. This stems from the discovery that the genomes of these soil-dwelling bacteria carry many clusters of biosynthetic genes that are not expressed during typical screens for antibiotic activity and other biologivcal effects. The challenge is to find ways to 'wake up' the gene clusters by manipulating their regulation either genetically or metabolically.
