Plants form beneficial interactions with bacteria and fungi that facilitate the acquisition of limiting nutrients, including nitrogen and phosphorus. Crop yields are highly dependent on the application of these nutrients through inorganic fertilisers. My work dissects how the microorganisms are perceived, and the cellular changes necessary for microbial accommodation, with a focus use of these associations to improve the equity and sustainability of global food production.
