We are interested in how the spike proteins of enveloped viruses work in virus entry into the cell by membrane fusion and how they can elicit antibodies that inhibit this process. The mechanisms are studied using biochemical assays and the spike protein structures by single particle cryo-electron microscopy. We are using the retroviruses HIV-1 and the Moloney mouse leukemia virus and the alphavirus Semliki Forest virus as our models.
