Cell cycle and cell morphogenesis in bacteria

I am interested in the cell cycle and cell morphogenesis, and approach this using simple tractable bacterial systems, mainly Bacillus subtilis. I was deeply involved in working out the regulatory pathways controlling endospore formation. Later this helped us begin elucidating central mechanisms of cell division and chromosome segregation. My lab has contributed to understanding the machinery of cell wall synthesis, and recently to how bacterial cells can proliferate in the absence of a wall. I have a long-standing interest in the discovery and development of novel antibiotics.
