Our research focuses on understanding the molecular basis of photosynthesis, with a particular focus on plants using the C4 pathway. Our work informs models of C4 evolution but also rational redesign of photosynthesis to improve crop productivity. Despite its complexity, C4 photosynthesis has arisen in more than sixty independent plant lineages. We examine how genes evolved to allow the transition from C3 to C4 photosynthesis.
