Microbial communities contain evolving and interacting species, which makes them difficult to understand. Combining theory with experiments, my group studies what it takes for bacteria to succeed in their communities, including the human microbiome. One way is to actively kill and inhibit competitors and we study the impacts of bacterial warfare. We also seek to use bacterial competition to manipulate gut communities for better health.
