Movement in animals is carried out by striated muscle, the contractile unit of which is the sarcomere. The research of our lab is focusing on the structural biology of the actin-based cytoskeleton and the muscle Z-disk. Using integrative structural biology approaches, we are studying sarcomeric muscle Z-disk proteins and their complexes. Our long-term goal is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of Z-disk assembly and three-dimensional architecture.
