Our research aims to define mechanisms that underpin the development of plant cells. Once defined, we trace the origins of these mechanisms and determine how they evolved during land plant evolution. We focus on cells that are critical for the uptake of nutrients form the soil and necessary for roots to penetrate soil matrices. Evolution of cells such as these was critical for the colonisation of the land by plants 470 million years ago.
