My group studies local translation of synaptic proteins, to elucidate synapse function and protein contributors to plasticity. We recently demonstrated that many locally synthesized synaptic proteins are mitochondrial in origin and their production supports the biogenesis of synaptic mitochondria. Currently, we investigate mitochondrial roles at synapses and how their dysfunction may contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders linked to autism.
