It is my goal to discover new (anaerobic) microbes in close collaboration with complementary experts. Once the microbes are enriched, I want to understand their genome and metabolism and to elucidate their role in the biogeochemical cycles. Most famous examples are the discovery of anammox and Methylomirabilis oxyfera bacteria that can be applied in waste water treatment and that play a significant role in the nitrogen or methane cycles.
