I am fascinated by the insights that can be gained by measuring cell-to-cell variability. We focus on the development of experimental and theoretical approaches to the study of single-cell heterogeneity, and the determination of its role in disease and evolution. One main example is the variability in the response of bacteria to antibiotics which affects the evolution of resistance and our ability to clear infections.
