A functional CNS depends on a correct development and the maintenance of an optimal homeostasis. Variations in the developmental programs cause congenital malformations, whereas loss of CNS homeostasis leads to aging or neurodegenerative conditions. We divide our research efforts between these two extremes, investigating early vertebrate eye morphogenesis and related inborn defects and mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis.
