We investigate how complex biological systems evolve and function. We use a bottom-up non-supervised individual-based computational modeling strategy. We explore the often surprising consequences of basic interactions, like the emergence of multilevel evolution in spatial systems, evolution of complex genotype-phenotype maps, biased mutations and evolution of evolvability.
