Plants interact with multiple beneficial microbes, leading to symbiotic associations with varying degrees of stability over long evolutionary times. Plants also face and mount immune defenses against parasites. Using combinations of phylogenomics, biochemistry and genetics in multiple plants, we try to determine the origin, conservation and losses of the molecular mechanisms regulating symbiotic and pathogenic interactions.
