Pain and disease: the mycobacterial way

Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium ulcerans, the etiological agents of Tuberculosis and Buruli ulcer respectively, have strong interactions with eukaryotic cells allowing their successful persistence in the human host. Our current research is focused on investigating the molecular and cellular signalling pathways targeted by the major mycobacterial virulence factors, namely the ESX1 secretion system and the polyketide mycolactone.
