Roughly one-third of all proteins cross or insert into a cellular membrane during their maturation. Proteins that fail to mature properly must be promptly degraded to avoid accumulation of disease-causing aberrant products. Our lab studies the various pathways of membrane protein biogenesis, the mechanisms cells use to recognize and eliminate mistakes during maturation, and the diseases associated with failed quality control.
