We (1) investigate how short intragenic RNA elements that activate the RNA-dependent stress kinase PKR regulate inflammatory cytokine and hemoglobin gene expression by controlling mRNA splicing or translation; (2) are developing a novel host-oriented therapeutic approach to protect broadly against toxins, bacterial and viral infections by targeting the B7/CD28 costimulatory axis to attenuate the inflammatory cytokine storm harmful to the host.
