Nitrogen-fixing nodule symbiosis with diazotrophic rhizobium bacteria is a well-known trait in legumes and a few plant species in related taxonomic lineages. Transferring this trait to crops is a long-standing objective. My research aims to identify the critical genetic adaptations that enable plants to establish such symbiosis and replicate these events in relevant crop species.
