Application of new molecules to electron microscopy aims to reveal biochemistry at nanometer resolution. We are exploiting new ways to target contrast and therapeutic agents to tumors and sites of inflammation based on their expression of extracellular proteases, and to highlight peripheral nerves to aid surgery. We are testing the hypothesis that life-long memories are stored as the pattern of holes in the perineuronal net surrounding neurons.
