The accuracy of membrane traffic depends on organelles having an 'identity' by which they can be recognised. This identity is defined by organelle-specific G proteins and phosphoinositide lipids. Focusing on the Golgi apparatus, we investigate how G proteins are activated in a spatially restricted manner, and identify the cytosolic proteins that then recognise them to direct accurate membrane traffic.
