We employ the bacterium Bacillus subtilis as primary model organism for understanding principles in bacterial spore dormancy and germination; for characterization of bacterial intercellular nanotube webs that serve to connect neighboring bacteria in an inter- and intra-species manner, identified in our laboratory; and for revealing modes of phage spread in multicellular communities.
