We study how the coordinated action of cellular and molecular components shapes embryonic tissues into functional organs. The mechanisms controlling cell fate specification are closely linked to tissue morphogenesis, but the causality of this crosstalk is unknown. We uncover the molecular circuitries, signals from neighboring niche cells and the physical constraints that determine stem cell fate.
