Our team has elucidated the mechanisms that maintain copy number through amplification recombination in repetitive ribosomal RNA genes (rDNA). In addition, we investigate how rDNA becomes unstable during aging, thereby promoting aging in budding yeast and animal cells. We also study the mechanisms by which genomic instability is reset in yeast daughter cells as well as in mammalian stem cells and germ cells, leading to cellular rejuvenation.
