Resolving the elusive origin of eukaryotes

My group uses cultivation-independent approaches such as single cell genomics and metagenomics to genomically explore the microbial world in order to obtain a better resolution in the Tree of Life. By exploring so-called 'Microbial Dark Matter', we aim to obtain a better understanding about the origin and early evolution of eukaryotes, and of mitochondria, and by doing so, we hope to better understand how complex life on Earth emerged.
