My lab is interested in the mechanism by which proteins are transported across or inserted into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane in eukaryotes and the cytoplasmic membrane in bacteria. We also study the mechanism by which misfolded ER proteins are transported back into the cytosol for degradation (ERAD). A third major project in the lab concerns the mechanism by which the endoplasmic reticulum adopts its characteristic shape.
