The arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis is a fascinating mutualistic interaction between roots of land plants and fungi of the Glomeromycotina. My group has taken molecular genetics and advanced imaging approaches in cereals to elucidate molecular mechanisms underpinning the apparently harmonious association. Insights gained led us to propose fundamentally new communication mechanisms enabling this prevalent and intimate plant-fungal partnership.
